Meet Art Williams, husband, father and coach who is also a Tampa Bay Bucs fan living in Portland, OR. I made an exception for Art since this series was supposed to highlight native Portlanders who are fans of various NFL teams across the country. But since he is good friend, I decided to write a blog post on him. Plus there aren’t many Bucs fans here in Portland. Being an Tampa Bay Bucs fan isn’t always easy nor fun. They’ve had some terrible seasons. But the fact they did win a super bowl does give them a little leverage. Now they have the number one draft pick in Jameis Winston, the future of the franchise looks bright.
Art became a Tampa Bay Bucs fan to spite his family because they were all Miami Dolphins fans living in the Daytona Beach area. Now isn’t it ironic that the mascot of his high school was the Buccaneers too? 🙂 Art excelled in football, basketball and track. Mainland’s most notable alumni is Vince Carter.
It was football that brought Art to the west coast. After a stint playing football and a local college in Santa Barbara, Art transferred to Portland State and was a standout wide receiver in the late 90’s. It was at Portland State that he met our mutual friend Jerome who was also a receiver. I’ll share more about Jerome in a later blog post.
Currently Art is the co-owner of Champions Barbershop in the heart of NE Portland. As we’ve seen in movies and commercials, there’s a lot of trash talk that goes on in barbershops and Champions is no different. I’ve been in there plenty of times and the most arguments center around Kobe, LeBron, best rapper and what ever current event is happening at the time. Art has represent the Tampa Bay Bucs through the good and bad times amongst the Cowboy, 49ers, Steelers and Chiefs (yes Chiefs) fans in the shop.
Currently, Art is a receivers coach at West Linn High School and the offensive coordinator for the JV team. I’m sure Art he gets a few side eyes from his players about his favorite football team. Check out Art’s story on why he is a fan of the Tampa Bay Bucs.
If you are living in Portland and also a fan of the Bucs, stop by Champions Barbershop and show some love to a fellow Tampa Bay Bucs Fan.
