Self Portraits aren’t easy. They are hard if you don’t have all the tools you need.
For the last few years, I have done a mini photo shoot to commemorate my birthday. Ever since I have turned 40, I am a little more comfortable in front of the camera. My cousin took my photos when I turned 41 and my mentor took my photos last year. Another photographer told me via Instagram that she could do them but she ended up not being available on my birthday. So I had no choice but to take my own portraits for my birthday. It was after I posted them on facebook that a few people told me they could of taken them for me.
For my self portrait set up, I used my Canon 60D which is on it’s last leg, 24-70 lens, a remote, a Yungnuo speedlight with magbounce attached. Without having a monitor, it was quite tricky trying to find the correct spot to stand. I am sure the people walking by were wondering what the heck I was doing. Out of all the shots I took, only 5 came out decent enoughto post to social media. Sigh.
If I were to do this again, I would definitely take my laptop and table then have my camera tethered into Lightroom so I can see what I am doing. Or upgrade to a camera that can wirelessly send images to my ipad.
Below you can see a random selection of the images that didn’t make it.
Happy Birthday to me.
