I’ve posted one video to Instagram and that was via the Flipagram app. But haven’t used it in a few months. Yesterday I decided to google how to create and export videos from Final Cut Pro (I’m still using version 6, seriously need to upgrade!!). I found a blog post explaining how to add edited videos to Instagram. I had some footage of a band I shot in Oakland that I had on my drive for my test video. I followed the blog posts instructions on how to set up my sequence and what format to export. The hardest part was what to include in the 15 seconds to tell a story. Took about 20 minutes for me to get the video how I wanted it with music and titles. I exported it to an H.264 file. Since I don’t have an up to date Mac that has IMessage, I had to email myself the video from Gmail to Yahoo since the IOS app for gmail won’t allow you to save videos to your iphone’s camera roll. I opened up the Instagram App, selected the video I saved and voila, my video was on Instagram. You can view video here.
Yesterday I had a little free time and the sun was out. I took my camera and changed the video aspects to 640×420. I shot about 2 minutes of footage of my ride from Cascade Station to downtown Portland. When I exported the movie, I made sure to check “prepare for internet streaming” so there won’t be any issues playing the video in the app. You can see the video here
I am sure more high quality videos will be on Instagram soon. Let me know your workflow or post yours in the comments below!
*Edited. You can also put your video into Dropbox and save the 15 second video on to your camera roll*
