For the third year in a row, Trombone Shorty has performed for The Oregon Zoo’s summer concert series. And I have been to all three shows. The first was with pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph. I forgot the name of the band that opened for him last year. And this year, the group Galactic opened up with an hour set. Trombone Shorty never disappoints. Roughly 5,000 fans were on their feet the whole time, clapping, shaking their hips and stomping their feet as he directed his band Orleans Ave reminiscent of James Brown (with out the hand signals for fines!). They performed songs from all of their studio albums and included James Brown’s “Gonna Have a Funky Good Time”. Although his set was 75 minutes. It went pretty fast. I’m sure many wouldn’t have mind an extra 30 or 40 minutes added to the set. The band did come out for an encore performance of “Hurricane Season”, the only time he played the trumpet. After the show, I got a chance to meet him and thanked him for the tickets. If the Oregon Zoo invites him back next year, best believe I will be up in front swaying my hips with the rest of them.
Check out his tour dates here. You have to see one of their shows to experience true New Orleans Funk, Rock and Soul.
